i’ve always believed yaoi/bl was canonical gay (smut) works primarily japanese media but i’ve also used it to refer to korean bl manhwa. when i’m talking about chinese gay media i call it ‘danmei’. when i say canonical i mean the lead characters always end up being sexually and or romantically involved with each other. u don’t have to create theories about their supposed queerness.
however, ever since yaoi has become more ubiquitous…in the online zeitgeist…i see many proclaimed fujos refer to anything gay as yaoi. even shounen ships. think satosugu or bakudeku. i’ve seen ppl call conclave(2024) old man yaoi. even heartstopper fan calling heartstopper ‘yaoi’ lol (despite the author being entitled about their queer media and denigrating e.asian bl works(YAOI) as vile to make her work seem more wholesome).
i don’t have an issue with shipping, it’s just the use of terminology here. am i just being pedantic because i primarily read japanese/korean bl and don’t consider non-canonical gay works yaoi or is it a valid belief held by other fujoshis…
